An Athlete at Any Age
Competitors at the Veterans Golden Age Games enjoy competition and camaraderie.
Each year, hundreds of U.S. military veterans over the age of 55 gather to share in the spirit of camaraderie and competition at the Golden Age Games.
This year, approximately 700 people will participate in swimming, cycling, shuffleboard, air rifle and a variety of other events from June 2–5. There are special divisions for athletes who are in wheelchairs or are visually impaired.
For some, the competition—open to seniors who receive medical care at the Department of Veteran Affairs medical facility—provides a chance to spend time and reconnect with fellow servicemen and women.
For others, it is an impetus for personal change. Some seniors say they enjoy the opportunity to rediscover the satisfaction of training for a physical challenge.
Retired Navy senior chief Joe Velasquez, 60, told the Armed Forces Press Service that many participants are "happier than they've been in years."
"People tell me every year that the two things they look forward to in life as they get older are waking up in the morning and competing in the Golden Age Games in the summer," he said.
