Be Alert
While a Copperhead is not the most venomous snake, sensitivities to venom vary among individuals so snakebite can quickly develop into a true medical emergency. Symptoms of a severe reaction to snakebite are rapid and weak pulse, profuse sweating, extreme difficulty breathing and unconsciousness.
If a person is bitten, IMMEDIATELY CALL EMS. Keep the person calm, this slows the heart rate which slows the spread of the venom. A VERY LOOSE fitting tourniquet can be applied a few inches above the bite. Your fingers should be able to fit loosely between the skin and the tourniquet. The tourniquet should not restrict the blood flow of major blood vessels.
To avoid encounters with snakes, stay on sidewalks and away from areas where the snakes may rest. Look at the areas you are about to walk on or in. BE ALERT !!!
Keep doors closed. Do not prop them open.
If you see a snake, keep away from it. Call Public Safety and advise them of the exact location of the snake sighting.
